PT-Approved Resolutions to Add to Your List

It’s that time of year again! The new year is just around the corner, which means many will create resolutions and set goals for the upcoming year. I want you to reflect on the goals you set last year. How did they go? How many did you accomplish? If you didn’t quite achieve what you wanted, why was that? Reflecting on what worked and didn’t work for you is key to understanding how to improve your behaviors this upcoming year. In this blog, I will lay out a few resolutions that I think everyone should have on their list this year, and I plan to make it easy to follow and implement so you will have some guaranteed goals to hit to give you momentum throughout the year.

Commit to Resistance Training

Whether at home or the gym, one day a week or seven days a week, resistance training is important to everyone’s lifestyle. The myriad benefits are more than enough motive to include this as part of your routine in the upcoming year. Find something you enjoy, start slow, and build consistency with your routine.

Commit to Cardiovascular Training

While resistance training can provide some form of cardiovascular fitness, you will likely need more dedicated cardio to help fill your fitness gaps. The AHA suggests 150 minutes of activity per week, and you might not get all of that from resistance training. Go for a walk, jog, bike ride, etc.; anything you can enjoy to help build your weekly routine for the new year. Your heart will thank you!

Commit to Stretching

Stretching can have some very positive effects on your body. It can help with stiff muscles and joints and even be turned into a workout (e.g., yoga). Maintaining flexibility as we age is a great way to ensure we stay mobile and strong through all movement patterns. Plus, a good stretch just feels nice sometimes. You can incorporate it into a workout routine warmup or stretch on your own at any time of the day. 10-30 minutes a day is an easy place to start.

Resolutions are a great way to motivate yourself to make some changes, but consistency in your routine is essential to building new habits and making those positive changes a permanent fixture in your life. I stand by these resolutions, consistent in my weekly routine for years. If you have any further questions about how to get started, scheduling a free assessment at your local Athletico is a wonderful way to get answers and help with your goals for the New Year.
