With continued shelter in place orders across the country, many athletes are having to alter training and competition schedules including Team USA’s Rhythmic Gymnasts. Unable to attend practice as they normally would, their competition season has been interrupted along with the delay of the Tokyo Olympics. Laura Zeng and Evita Griskenas, two of Team USA’s top rhythmic gymnasts, give us insight into what they are doing at home to stay active and prevent injury as well as tips for other rhythmic gymnasts.

Layers of a Concussion: Symptoms & Treatment

It is common for some things to be overwhelming and confusing after a concussion. Like any recovery, concussion rehabilitation is not linear, but full of peaks and valleys.
Throughout rehabilitation for a concussion, patients may experience new symptoms after a more prominent symptom has resolved. Some people might even have a hard time relating symptoms directly to their concussion. Fortunately, physical therapists trained in concussion management are able to recognize these signs and symptoms and guiding patients through rehab.

Why Should You See a Physical Therapist First for Pain?

In all likelihood, there will come a time in our lives where we find ourselves in pain. Traditionally, if you weren’t able to manage the pain yourself, you would schedule an appointment with your doctor or seek out an orthopedic surgeon to have them assess you. However, numerous studies show a strong benefit of seeking out physical therapy first when dealing with musculoskeletal pain1,3. Musculoskeletal pain refers to pain in the muscles, tendons, bones, joints, ligaments and nerves of the body.

Exercises to Strengthen Your Pelvic Floor

The pelvic floor, also known as the “hammock” of your core, is very important to keep strong and mobile. It provides support for the pelvic organs, including the bladder, uterus and rectum in the female pelvis. In the male pelvis, the pelvic floor supports the bladder and rectum.

Preventing Wrist Pain When Nursing

After the mental and physical changes brought on by pregnancy, the last thing that a new mother wants to experience is pain in her wrists and hands from nursing or feeding her newborn baby. Getting an infant to latch on can be hard enough under normal conditions, and yet the feeling of “pins and needles” or wrist pain, can makes things even more difficult.
