Erina Ueda

“I am a professional dancer with Giordano Dance Chicago, and during rehearsal—just the day before a performance—I tore my meniscus. It was such a heartbreaking moment. I reached out to Caitlin, who immediately checked to see what was going on. She helped me get to a doctor and an MRI scan, where I learned I would need surgery. The recovery time depended on the type of surgery, which could range from 4–6 weeks to 4–6 months. It was another heartbreaking moment, as I knew we had many exciting places to tour with Giordano Dance Chicago.

I knew recovery was 97% mental. Caitlin Carroll, my physical therapist, was my coach, therapist, and biggest supporter. During the season, I observed rehearsals and dance classes, took notes, and visualized myself dancing with my team. For two months, I just watched. Gradually, I started taking barre classes, taking it one step at a time. Then one day, Caitlin told me I could start jumping. I was shocked. ‘Really?!’ I asked.

That first jump brought me to tears—I was so happy. Jumping and dancing in the air are my favorite things because they make me feel like I’m flying. By the third month of recovery, I was back to leaping, and it felt incredible.

Caitlin has helped me reach my dream. Not only physical guidance but also mentally. She never gave up on me and was always there for whenever needed. I got back stronger than ever and many achievements and dreams have come true.”
