I was a couch potato for years, but I began running in June 2023 and found that I loved it. I ran comfortably until November when I started to have excruciating pain in my right leg. I came into the clinic for an evaluation with Marissa, who diagnosed an injury in the posterior tibialis muscle of my right leg. She was thorough in her explanation of the injury and clear in the steps we would take to rehabilitate my leg.
My goal from the start was to get back to running without that pain. I felt pretty down when I started therapy. Marissa was hugely helpful through her humor and encouragement which kept me going. Her deep knowledge of sports injuries and how to treat them made me feel confident that I could get better, if I put in the work. Trust is important when working with someone to regain mobility and I trusted Marissa from the start.
We had two sessions every week. Therapy was challenging but rewarding. I always felt safe attempting new exercises with her guidance. I put in the effort in the clinic with additional prescribed exercises at home. The weeks passed and I began feeling stronger. The pain started to lessen until it was gone. It had seemed like an intimidating climb weeks earlier but I had made it.
A physical therapy clinic is not generally a place that runners want to end up. It usually means there’s a problem which is stopping them from participating in the sport that they love. But the dedicated clinicians, like Marissa, can get you going again. Now I’m back to running three days per week and Athletico Andersonville South is the reason why that’s possible. – Matt Powers
