An Exercise Routine to Try When You Feel Like Getting Outdoors

Spring and Summer are inspiring times of the year. Warmer weather, longer daylight hours, and the return of green leaves and fields gives us the message to wake up from a winter hibernation. This is the time of year for getting outside and getting active. Sunshine and fresh air provide benefits not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. Many people are inspired to start exercising outside when the weather warms, but often are not sure where to begin. This article will share a simple routine to help you get started.

Squat Mobility and Movement Prep

The squat is one of the most fundamental movements a human needs to be able to perform both in life and in sports. In life we use the squat to sit down and stand up from chairs or going down to the floor to reach for objects. In sport we use squat movements when preparing to jump and land, as well as when getting into an athletic position. The squat is also used in the strength training realm as it has tremendous carry over to all other aspects of sport.

It’s All in the Hips: Part 2

In my last post, I made the case for 2 muscles in your hips being integral for optimal health and performance. The first post focused on the gluteus medius, but now it’s time to take a look at the gluteus maximus. Our 2 gluteus maximus muscles (glutes for short) make up a majority of our rear and are probably the most famous muscles in the body. It has been focused on in the famous “Buns of Steel” workout and has inspired more than its fair share of songs. The glutes’ main action is extending our legs backwards, which is incredibly useful for anything from walking and standing up to sprinting and lifting. The problem is that since most of us spend a majority of the day sitting, our glutes are rarely used and are often weak. (more…)
