Impact Exercise for the Aging Adult

MYTH: You must stop doing high impact exercise as you age and perform low impact activities instead.

FACT: We know that as we age, it is common to lose strength and power. However, that does not mean you have to avoid higher impact activities.

Many people are active when they are younger through sports, running, and other activities. As we get older, we tend to decrease high impact activities. Sometimes this is due to a previous injury, reoccurring pain, or a fear of getting hurt.

Why Physical Therapy Is Your Best Bet For Treating Concussions

“I didn’t know that there was Physical Therapy for that!” I hear a variation of this phrase from most patients and even some physicians when I tell them that I am a physical therapist specializing in concussions. Over the last several years, much research has gone into concussions and treatment options. We confidently say that physical therapy is often very effective at treating concussion symptoms. We have also learned that 70% of concussions heal spontaneously on their own within 20 days. That brings up the question: When should someone seek physical therapy for their concussion? Recent research indicates that despite most concussions healing on their own, there is a benefit to starting physical therapy quickly.

Health Has No Age: Anaerobic Exercise for Teens, Adults, and Seniors

Cardiovascular disease has been the leading cause of death over the last century. Cardio exercise, also called aerobic exercise, has become popular due to its benefits for the cardiovascular system. However, aerobic exercise is not the only form of exercise. Anaerobic exercise is another form that people of all ages need to participate in to achieve optimal health.

Anaerobic exercise is defined as exercise of high intensity and short duration where oxygen is not the primary energy source. Anaerobic means “without oxygen,” and instead of using oxygen as the energy source, the body uses stored energy in the muscles and fat.
