Don’t Let Fear Keep You Out of the Game

Injuries in sports are common and can occur at any age and at any time – including practice or competition. One of the consequences of injury can include fear of re-injury when the athlete returns to play. Fear can potentially be a limiting factor in rehabilitation and recovery. However, there are ways to address these psychological concerns during recovery to help athletes return to play with more confidence.

Is It Healthier to Play More Than One Sport?

There is an estimated 30-45 million school aged kids playing organized sports each year.5  Lately, there has also been a trend of young athletes training for sports at earlier ages and specializing in one sport with a goal of elite status.4 But is it healthier to play more than one sport?

Common Overuse Injuries in Young Athletes

Children are susceptible to certain injuries because their growth plates are still open. Sever’s Disease, Osgood-Schlatter or Sinding-Larson-Johannsen (SLJ), and Little League Elbow are just a few diagnoses that children can acquire at the growth plates. Typically children diagnosed with these injuries are very active in sports, which may cause the overuse injury in the growth plate.

The NFL season begins tonight, but there is still time for Fantasy Football players to make adjustments to their lineups before kickoff.

To ease the decision process for those adjusting their lineups, we are highlighting tips from Athletico’s Athletic Trainer Jacob Dailey throughout the NFL season. Athletico Fantasy Football Injury Report

The NFL’s season officially starts on Thursday, September 8th, which means that fans are already assembling their Fantasy Football teams.

To help you reign supreme in your league this year, we will be highlighting tips from Athletico’s Athletic Trainer Jacob Dailey throughout the season. Mallet Finger: A Common Sports Injury

From a high level competition to a weekend pick-up game, any athlete can experience a hand injury.  Bumping, jamming, crushing, or cutting the backside of the finger near the tip, can cause a tendon injury known as a mallet finger.

Throw the Perfect Fastball and Prevent Tommy John Surgery in Baseball

Major League Baseball (MLB) has had home run eras, base stealing eras, and dead ball eras.  Now, we have the “velocity” era where starting and relieving pitchers are throwing harder than ever.

  • 2007 | Pitchers 25 years or younger threw a fastball with an average velocity of 90.8 mph.
  • 2008 | 13 different relievers threw a fastball at an average of 95 mph or greater.
  • 2013 | The number of relievers that threw 95 mph or greater grew from 13 to 46.
  • 2013 | The same age group of pitchers (25 years or younger) averaged 92.5 mph fastballs.

AC Sprains and other upper body injuries:

Research in the past has identified that approximately 70% of upper extremity injuries in ice hockey occur during games and that approximately 50% of them can be defined as a sprain, strain, or a fracture.3 The most common diagnosed injury of the shoulder in hockey today is a sprain of the Acromioclavicular (AC) joint, or AC Sprains.
